Sheila Davis, RNC
Family Birthing Center and Pediatrics
St. Mary Medical Center

As a student at Purdue Calumet, I participated in a nursing fellowship program at St. Mary Medical Center that allowed me to train and prepare for patient care in a hospital setting. When I graduated, I was hired as a nurse in St. Mary's Labor and Delivery department. Now, 13 years later, I'm a charge nurse here, and as the hospital has grown, so have I.

Continued professional development and growth is encouraged and supported at St. Mary Medical Center. Nurses are truly considered a member of the medical team, whose input and opinions are valued. The nurses here are really encouraged to continue to keep up with their professional development, and are rewarded and supported when they do. This comes from the administration on down, so that the nurses continue to learn the best ways to care for patients, and bring that education into practice. Administration cares, and that trickles on down. It's a breath of fresh air.

I now have my RNC (certification in inpatient obstetrics) and am a certified lactation consultant. I float to different areas of the hospital at times to help, and helped in the implantation of EPIC. I participate on the Standards and Practices committee where we talk about the need for new policies and review the old ones.

I have recommended St. Mary Medical Center as a good place to work to several other nurses. I told them that we have good benefits, competitive pay, and that nurses here enjoy a certain amount of autonomy and decision-making authority. Our opinions and input into a patient's care is sought out and valued.

The other reasons I've encouraged others to work at St. Mary is the competitive pay, good doctors on staff, kind people throughout our hospital, and a thorough job on keeping up with the newest and highest expectations of standards of care. It is why I also chose to come here as a patient, when I needed surgery.

Healthcare is always changing. We have job security here at Community Healthcare System. I am happy to be a part of three hospitals that are growing and where there are a lot of opportunities.
