Cardiac Rehabilitation at
Cardiac Rehab-Fitness Pointe is a Phase 3 Cardiac Rehabilitation department. It is located within the Community Hospital Fitness Pointe, a medically-based, 84,000-square-foot-fitness center. Cardiac Rehab-Fitness Pointe is a 5,040 square-foot, state-of-the-art department featuring the latest in exercise equipment. This equipment includes Quinton treadmills, Schwinn Airdyne bicycles, Concept II rowing ergometers, Nustep recumbent steppers, Stairmaster stepping machines, Precor elliptical fitness trainers, Tectrix recumbent and upright bicycles, and Cybex arm bicycles.
Phase 3 Cardiac Rehab/HeartFit: This program is designed to help individuals acquire the skills and knowledge needed to work towards heart disease management and prevention. HeartFit combines cardiovascular and muscular strength conditioning along with education and individual risk factor counseling, all within a supportive environment that encourages patients to make necessary lifestyle changes.
The exercise component includes structured classes, 1 ½ hours in duration, which meet weekly on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6:30am, 8:30am, and 10:30am and Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 3:30pm and 5:30pm. These classes include group warm-ups, hand weight exercises, 40 minutes of cardiovascular exercise followed by group cool downs and relaxation. Qualified Cardiac Rehab personnel provide a supervised environment with daily monitoring of the heart rhythm and blood pressure.
The education component is offered in conjunction with the exercise sessions with ½ hour classes offered either before or after an exercise class. This vital component explores the effects of risk factor modification, how to eat healthier, how to control high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reduce stress in our lives, and realistic weight management goals. The Cardiac Rehab staff's goal is to fully educate individuals about how these risk factors affect them physiologically, on every basis, and to guide them in ways to improve.
Candidates for HeartFit/Phase 3 Cardiac Rehab includes anyone with a history of heart disease, those with risk factors for heart disease, and his/her spouse.
LifeFit: This program offers the excellent education component without the exercise portion of Phase 3 Cardiac Rehab/HeartFit. This is the program for those individuals who exercise elsewhere, but want to further their knowledge of heart disease and its risk factors.
Diabetes Management with Exercise: This 4-week program features 3 days per week of exercise, multiple educational lectures, and support. Patients experience the benefits of exercise on blood sugar control in a medially supervised setting.
How to be a HeartSmart Kid: This program is an interactive learning experience for children Kindergarten through fifth grade This class teaches about the heart and ways to keep it healthier. HeartSmart Kid is offered as a parent/child class at Fitness Pointe or in a group setting for small groups such as girl scout/boy scout meetings or school classroom activities.
Mended Hearts: This program is an international support group for heart patients. Our Mended Hearts Chapter holds monthly support group meetings for members, heart patients, and their families. Programs of social and educational interest are presented with topics varying from new medical techniques to exercise, diet, and lifestyle. A second component of the Mended Hearts organization is the visiting program. Specially trained volunteers who have had their own personal experience with heart disease visit heart patients in the hospital, assisting with the patient's emotional recovery, and helping the patient and his/her family approach treatment and recovery with a positive state of mind.
The Cardiac Rehabilitation staff consists of Registered Nurses with critical and cardiovascular nursing backgrounds and Masters degreed Exercise Physiologist with certifications from the American Society of Exercise Physiologists and the American College of Sports Medicine. Among these 5 staff members over 65 years of cardiac rehab experience. Our staff regularly attends conferences and workshops to advance their education and update the program in this progressively changing field. We strive to be great educators as well as true advocates for our patients.
