Exercise of the Month
Restorative Yoga Posture Supta Padangusthasana - Provides relief from backache and stretches the hips, hamstrings, and calves. Step 1 - Lie supine (on your back) on the floor, legs extended fully. If your head doesn't rest comfortably on the floor, support it on a folded blanket. Exhale, bend the left knee, and draw the thigh into your torso. Hug the thigh to your belly. Press the back of the right thigh heavily to the floor, and push actively through the right heel. Step 2 - Loop a strap (or beach towel) around the arch of the left foot and hold the strap (or towel ends) in both hands. Inhale and straighten the knee, pressing the left heel up toward the ceiling. Walk your hands up the strap until the elbows are fully extended. Broaden the shoulder blades across your back. Keeping the hands as high on the strap as possible, press the shoulder blades lightly into the floor. Widen the collarbones away from the sternum and breathe slowly. Step 3 - Extend up first through the back of the left heel, and once the back of the leg between the heel and sitting bone is fully lengthened, lift through the ball of the big toe. Draw the foot a little closer to your head, if you can, increasing the stretch on the back of the leg. Step 4 - Hold the vertical position of the leg anywhere from 1 to 3 minutes. Release the strap and hold the leg in place for 30 seconds, then slowly release as you exhale. Repeat with the right leg for the same length of time.

May is National Arthritis Month
Arthritis is often misunderstood, largely due to misconceptions, misinformation, and old wives tales which persist. Unless the difficulties and limitations imposed by arthritis affect you or a family member directly, your exposure to the disease may be minimal. Arthritis is a complicated disease because there are many different types of arthritis, various symptom patterns, and numerous treatment options. Severe forms of arthritis can be disabling and can affect many aspects of daily living.
Staying Active With Arthritis Each year during National Arthritis Month, the Arthritis Foundation encourages people with arthritis to stay active. Walking, exercise, and avoiding a sedentary lifestyle are important.
Try to move your joints gently through their full range of motion every day.
Gradually build up endurance exercises to 20 to 30 minutes per day, at least three times a week.
After exercising, cool down for 5-10 minutes to let your heart slow down and allow your muscles to relax.
Fitness Pointe offers a variety of classes both in the pools and on land that assists keeping you active, while being gentle on the joints. Follow the link below to view the class schedules and descriptions.
