Fall Into Healthy Lifestyle Eating
By Kate Fairbairn
Fall is a time for change. We change from hot weather to cooler temperatures, relaxed leisure filled summer days to more regular schedules, less ice cream, barbeques, and cold drinks to healthier, more consistent fare. There's no better time than fall to look at what we have done, where we need to go, and develop the action plan to get there.
Ask yourself these simple questions:
- What kind of lifestyle eating changes do you need to make this fall?
- How healthy are you eating? How much are you eating? To determine this, do a food journal for 3-4 days including at least one weekend day. Be honest and accurate. Measure the amount you eat, don't guesstimate it. Write down the time you ate, what you ate and exact amount for starters. After doing that, sit down and take a good look at your eating patterns and highlight your 'less than healthy food choices'.
- Do you check the Nutrition Facts label for what is considered a serving size.? You may be quite amazed at what you learn compared to what you are actually eating.
After you are aware of your eating behavior, see what needs to be changed and set your SMART goal.
S=Specific (I will eat a bowl of oatmeal each morning)
M= Measurable ( I will eat a 1 cup bowl of oatmeal each morning with ½ cup of low fat milk and ½ banana) for the next 30 days)
A= Attainable (Do you think you can attain the above stated goal? If not, change it)
R = Realistic = (Do you even LIKE oatmeal? If not, choose a different healthy breakfast option)
T= Timebound ( I will eat a 1 cup bowl of oatmeal each morning with ½ cup of low fat milk and ½ banana for the next 30 days)
Set one or two short term goals, using the SMART technique listed above. Once you achieved your goal, time to set another one. It's a great feeling when you set and accomplish your goals. Not only do you feel better physically, but mentally as well.
Fall is change, make yours positive this year.
