Teens Get Fit

The Statistics
The incidence of obesity is increasing in the United States and is particularly apparent in children. A recent report (South, Med.J 90(8): 806-813.1997) indicates that:
  • Prevalence of obesity in girls by age 11 is 47% in African Americans and 27% in Caucasians. In boys it is 29% for African Americans and 22% for Caucasians.

  • Obese children are at increased risk of disease (diabetes/ cardiovascular disease).

  • Approximately 80% of obese adolescents become obese adults. (Proc.Nutr.Soc.56(1B):195-209.1997)

  • Low fitness levels lead to perceived difficulty in play.

  • Difficulty in play leads to reduced physical activity in play.

  • Reduced physical activity in play leads to reduced energy expenditure, which leads to fat gain.
