Community Hospital Oncology Department Move Brings Inpatients Private Rooms, Outpatients, New Hours
New, private rooms on the fifth floor Oncology unit of Community Hospital in Munster are designed to be soothing and organic. The rooms are decorated in tones of sage green, chestnut, goldenrod and cream. A comfortable sofa with built-in storage unit, desk area, sink and flat screen television are modern, upscale accommodations in every room. The sofa folds down into a bed to accommodate an overnight guest.
MUNSTER —Community Hospital on Monday will open its new Inpatient Oncology unit featuring all private patient rooms with the latest in contemporary amenities. The move is part of the $10 million expansion to provide additional private patient rooms at the hospital. The Inpatient Oncology unit private room upgrade follows a $5 million expansion of the hospital Family Birthing Center, completed in September of 2008, which also provides all new private patient accommodations.
“We understand that our patients want a hospital that can cater to their needs for privacy, provide accommodations for visitors, and be able to deliver care as efficiently and as conveniently as possible,” says Donald P. Fesko, Administrator of Community Hospital. “We believe this project rivals the comforts of a first-class hotel, matching our goal of delivering the finest service to our patients.”
Inpatient Oncology has relocated from the second floor to the fifth floor of the hospital’s West Pavilion, bringing comfort and privacy to a whole new level. The former Oncology unit on the second floor will be remodeled and open later this summer as a new nursing unit with all private rooms for patients who require specialized monitoring for a variety of conditions. The sixth floor, which will also feature all private rooms, is expected to open in late February or early March. The public will be invited to tour the sixth floor, all-private patient room unit in conjunction with the Open House for the new $32 million Emergency Department Pavilion on Sunday, February 8.
An estimated 40 new jobs — nursing and support staff - will be created with the opening of the new expanded units on the fifth and sixth floors of the hospital.
The hallways of the new inpatient Oncology unit on the hospital’s fifth floor is awash in the soft glow of light that emits from wall sconces positioned outside each of the 26 private patient rooms. Designed to be soothing and organic, the rooms are decorated in tones of sage green, chestnut, goldenrod and cream. A comfortable sofa with built-in storage unit, desk area, sink and flat screen television are modern, upscale accommodations that complete every room. The sofa folds down into a bed to accommodate an overnight guest. The spacious, glass tiled bath area with shower rivals the comfort and convenience found in a luxury hotel.
“With the addition of all private rooms on the new Inpatient Oncology unit, we wanted to provide an environment that allows our patients to be close to their family to cope with a difficult diagnosis,” says Donald P. Fesko, Administrator of Community Hospital. “On our Oncology Unit, we allow 24-hour visitation so with the addition of all private rooms, it will be easier for families to stay close to their loved ones.”
Outpatient Oncology, which was also located on the second floor has been relocated to the third floor of the West Pavilion of Community Hospital. This new Outpatient unit will continue to provide chemotherapy, antibiotics, vaccines, cell growth stimulating factors and more. Blood transfusions and blood components are also offered. The Outpatient Oncology unit works to accommodate patient’s busy schedules with extended hours from 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., seven days per week.
