Nursing Awards presented to Community Hospital staff

Cyndi Branson, certified nursing assistant (left) and Michele Huebner, registered nurse have been selected as Extraordinary Care Award recipients at Community Hospital. Branson received the “2010 Remarkable Image of Caring Award,” and Huebner received the “2010 Nursing Excellence Award,” at the culmination of the hospital’s observance of National Nurses Week.

Community Hospital’s celebration of National Nurses Week culminated with a ceremony to recognize outstanding nurses, as voted by their peers. Cyndi Branson, certified nursing assistant, received the “2010 Remarkable Image of Caring Award,” and Michele Huebner, registered nurse, received the “2010 Nursing Excellence Award”. In addition to the Extraordinary Care Awards presentation, Nurses Week featured two fund raisers that generated more than $35,000 for the Cancer Resource Centre, Munster, IN.

“During Nurses Week, we celebrate the compassion and dedication of the exceptional nursing staff here at Community Hospital,” said Don Fesko, Community Hospital CEO."Our nurses’ infinite generosity and desire to give back demonstrates the difference these professionals make not only on the job, but for so many people out in the community as well.”

Branson and Huebner were nominated by their peers at the hospital for going above and beyond in their respective patient care areas.

The Image of Caring award nomination for Branson states, “She takes care of all the little things a person can’t do for themselves when they are ill and in the hospital. She comforts them if they are upset about something, or consoles them if they are sad. She always knows the right thing to say at the right time. She treats patients the way we all would like our moms and dads to be treated, with respect, dignity and compassion.”

The Nursing Excellence award nomination from a fellow nurse regarding Huebner points out, “My father was a patient on the Oncology unit. All the staff was great, but Michele had that special something. I didn’t notice until I was on the flip side as a visitor to my dad. Michele was excellent from the time she introduced herself to my family, to telling us about herself as a nurse, and by making my father’s needs and wants a priority. She is very confident and compassionate in her job. You never know the ‘wow’ factor until you are on the other side looking in, and she wowed us with her extra special qualities. She truly believes that together, everyone accomplishes more, and she demonstrated that through great communication with us in my dad’s plan of care.”

“I am proud of all the dedicated nurses, certified nursing assistants, patient care technicians and nurse externs who work at Community Hospital,” said Chief Nursing Officer Ronda McKay, R.N., MSN, CNS. “Cyndi and Michele are two wonderful examples of an entire staff that provides compassionate care to our patients, day in and day out.”

Before the presentation of the awards, Community Hospital nursing staff members held a theme basket raffle and scrub sale that raised $35,132 for the Cancer Resource Centre. To date, Patient Care Services at Community Hospital in Munster has donated more than $98,380 to the Cancer Resource Centre toward programs and services.

The Cancer Resource Centre, a support program of the Community Cancer Research Foundation, is located at 926 Ridge Road in Munster. Within the walls of the Centre and outside in the Healing Garden, those affected by cancer can obtain the support and resources they need to cope with the diagnosis. Patients and their families will find a non-medical place where they can come to celebrate life, deal with hardships and get answers to their questions. All services are offered to cancer patients and their families free of charge.
