Volunteers at Community Hospital in Munster have given more than 30,000 hours of their time this year to help the hospital carry out its mission. About 150 of the 280 volunteer member-base were recognized and honored during a luncheon on April 14 to mark National Volunteer Week.

“In my family, being a member of Community Hospital’s Auxiliary is a long-standing tradition,” said Donald P. Fesko, Chief Executive Officer of Community Hospital. “My mother and grandmother were both auxiliary members. Through them, I first learned how rewarding the act of giving is, and that tradition carries on today with all of you. Your talents and time are a gift to Community Hospital, Community Healthcare System and the community at large, and are greatly appreciated.”

The Auxiliary predates the hospital and members actively participated in fund raising that helped the hospital open its doors in September of 1973. Since that time, nearly one-half million volunteer hours have been logged by members donating time and talents. This year, individual volunteer service hours range from 100 to 10,000 hours.

Not only do Community Hospital Auxiliary members donate their time, but are instrumental in raising funding for designated purposes that has allowed the hospital to grow and expand through the years. Money is generated from hospital fund raisers, the Red Garter Gift Shoppe sales and the Red Garter gift cart. To date the hospital auxiliary has provided more than $2 million to assist the hospital.

The Auxiliary Scholarship Fund also has awarded more than 250 scholarships, valued at $1,500 apiece, to eligible children of hospital employees who are studying for careers in the healthcare field.

At the luncheon celebration, the auxiliary held its annual business meeting. A brief installation ceremony was held for the 2011-12 term. Serving are Gayle Parr, president; Otie Anderson, vice-president; Paula Nellans, recording secretary; Daisy Merich, treasurer and Mary Jo Holly as corresponding secretary.
