Community Hospital one of 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery/Cardiac Care

Community Hospital is the best rated hospital in Northwest Indiana for overall cardiac services (including cardiology and heart surgery, stroke care, overall neurosciences services including neurosurgery, and vascular surgery), according to the latest report from HealthGrades®, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization. In addition to the regional recognitions, Community Hospital’s quality has also been recognized at the national level. The hospital is ranked among the top ten percent nationally for its quality in stroke care, coronary interventional procedures, cardiology services, heart surgery, and overall cardiac care.

With this newly released information, Community Hospital becomes the only hospital in Northwest Indiana to be designated as one of HealthGrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care™ and for Cardiac Surgery™ in 2012. Community Hospital is also the only Northwest Indiana hospital rated among HealthGrades® America’s 50 Best Hospitals four years in a row from 2008-2011, and, as a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence®, 2004-2011.

“Heart disease is our community’s number one health challenge,” said Donald P. Fesko, Chief Executive Officer of Community Hospital. “So it is equally challenging for our physicians and healthcare professionals to consistently be well-prepared to handle these critical health concerns for our patients. We are proud of their efforts and ongoing commitment to excellence.”

These five-star ratings are based on HealthGrades 2011 Healthcare Consumerism and Hospital Quality Report. According to the study, an increasing number of patients in the Chicago Designated Market Area® are seeking out quality information online, with 2,465,220 residents visiting between January and July, 2011 alone. HealthGrades’ web site provides a quality comparison of doctors and hospitals in the Chicago market at It also lists the Top 5 Most Searched Medical Specialties, by market, among patients seeking providers online.

“Patients today have a wide array options when it comes to choosing a healthcare provider,” said Kerry Hicks, HealthGrades chief executive officer. “At HealthGrades, we are proud to lead the way for empowering patient choice based on objective clinical outcomes and access to actionable quality measures. We commend Community Hospital for its superior quality and support of consumerism and transparency in the Northwest Indiana area.”

HealthGrades’ report found that patients treated at 5-star rated hospitals experience a 73% lower risk of mortality and a 63% lower risk of complications. Community Hospital achieved a 5-star rating in the following categories:
• Coronary bypass surgery
• Valve surgery
• Coronary interventions, including angioplasties and stents
• Treatment of heart failure

• In an online survey, 80% said they are very or somewhat concerned about the quality of hospital care in their community.

• The Chicago Designated Market Area® rated 1-star overall for joint replacement surgery quality, while Community Hospital is 5-star-rated in joint replacement surgery.
