Ice carvers from around the nation earn medals at 2002 Winter Magic Festival

Professional ice carvers from around the nation were honored with medals and prize money tonight at the conclusion of the 6th Annual Winter Magic Festival sponsored by Community Hospital. As part of Winter Magic 2002, the carvers participated in two separate competitions sanctioned by the National Ice Carving Association and judged according to the association’s strict regulations. They were cheered and watched by record crowds.

In the first competition, carvers had 5 ½ hours to carve four blocks of ice (each weighing about 250 pounds) into crystal clear frozen masterpieces. The second competition - a new event this year - gave competitors only one hour to carve the logo of sponsoring organization The Times in the most creative way possible.

Carvers who earned medals at this year’s competition qualified to participate in the 2003 National Ice Carving Competition, for which a location has not be set. According to National Ice Carving Association rules, bronze medalists earn 70 - 79 points, silver medalists earn 80-89 points, and gold medalists earn 90 points or more.

Following are the results of the 2002 Winter Magic Festival Ice Carving Competitions.
