Winter Magic Festival draws near; ice carving, fire & ice display featured
In about a month, Community Park in Munster will be transformed into a celebration of winter in true Midwestern style with onset of the 6th annual Winter Magic Festival, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Jan. 19, 2002. This one-day festival will once again feature a spectacular ice carving competition, with carvers visiting from all over the U.S. to compete for a chance to participate in the national championship later in the year.
Toting chain saws, chisels, blow torches, and other special tools of the trade, some of the nation’s top professional ice carvers will convene for Winter Magic 2002, sponsored by Community Hospital. They will compete against time, the weather, and each other’s creativity for a chance to advance in their profession.
The 2002 festival will also feature Fire and Ice, an event combining the opposite elements of fire and ice to create a rare and original display. Beginning at dusk, a 12-foot ice block fireplace and chimney will be set ablaze, giving life to dancing flames that create a luminous artistic form reflecting light off the ice and dripping water.
The Winter Magic Festival is a one-day extravaganza that celebrates and showcases the wonder of a true Midwestern winter season. Complete with the ice carving competition, horse-drawn carriage rides, snow wall painting for children, miniature ice golf, basketball and football throws, indoor children’s activities, magic, food, an indoor arts and crafts festival, and the Magic Ice Garden of sculptures, the festival has become a well-known family event drawing thousands of visitors each year.
The Winter Magic Festival will be free and open to the public in 2002. Visitor information and details of the festival’s events as they are planned are available at www.wintermagic.com.
