Excellence in Nursing Awards

Community Hospital’s celebration of National Nurses Week culminated with a ceremony to recognize the most outstanding nurse and top patient caregiver, as voted by their co-workers. Jim Phelan, an Intermediate Care Unit patient care technician, is recipient of the “2013 Patient Caregiver Excellence Award,” and Christine Hicks, registered nurse with Endoscopy has received the “2013 Nursing Excellence Award.”

“Nurses’ Week gives us another opportunity to highlight our outstanding staff,” said Community Hospital CEO Don Fesko. “We celebrate their compassion and dedication, and are proud of the efforts of all of our nurses and caregivers who make a difference in the lives of our patients.”

Phelan and Hicks were nominated by their peers at the hospital for going above and beyond in their respective patient care areas.

To meet the criteria for the Patient Caregiver Excellence award, the staff member must demonstrate excellence in the areas of Dignity, Compassionate Care, Community, Quality and Stewardship. These standards and values set the foundation for the hospital’s mission to bring quality care to everyone in need.

Phelan has worked at Community Hospital for less than two years, but is already making an impact on patient care and satisfaction.

According to his nominations, “There have been many times that he has gone above and beyond to help the nurses care for a confused patient or a patient who just needs extra TLC.” “All of the patients who have been in his care say they LOVE Jim.” “Patients always ask if he is on duty and are sad if he is not assigned to their room.” Other nominations state: “He has a great work ethic,” “He never hesitates to help” and “He is a fun person to work with.”

Hicks has been working at Community Hospital for more than 21 years. Excerpts from Hicks’ Nursing Excellence Award nominations state, “She does a lot of work ‘behind the scenes’ to assure patients get excellent care”. “She doesn’t just take care of the patients she also takes very good care of their families”. “She reassures them regarding their family members care, and listens”. Other nominations state: “The word ‘excellent’ is not enough to describe her”; “She makes the staff around her better”; “She is a co-worker, teacher, and friend” and “I’ve never met a more caring, compassionate, knowledgeable or helpful nurse”.

“I am proud of all the dedicated nurses, certified nursing assistants, patient care technicians and nurse externs who work at Community Hospital,” said Chief Nursing Officer Ronda McKay, RN, MSN, CNS. “Jim and Chris are two wonderful examples of an entire staff that provides compassionate care to our patients, day in and day out.”
