Community Hospital to host "A Family Affair"

The Community Hospital Outpatient Centre, St. John, welcomes the public to “A Family Affair” this month, with a variety of activities and free information for the whole family.

The event will bring together community groups, physicians and nurses for a fair that will focus on practical spring and summer-time health tips and interactive events for children and adults. It will take place from 1-4 p.m., May 19 at The Community Hospital Outpatient Centre, 9660 Wicker Ave., St. John. All events and screenings are free and open to the public.

“A Family Affair” will feature children’s activities including St. John fire truck and ambulance tours; The Munster Fire Department Smoke House, the St. John Police DARE officer and canine unit; entertainment by Illusionation: The Magic of Steven Kellogg; clowns; and the Tri-town Kiwanis Bike Safety Rodeo. Children and adults may bring their own bikes for a free safety check before riding the safety course. A limited number of helmets will be available for giveaway. Children may also have their motor skills tested in a fun activity supervised by Community Hospital’s pediatric physical therapists.

The event also will include tips and demonstrations for safe grilling, golfing and gardening; Community Care Center physicians with information about asthma, allergies, bee stings, bites and poison ivy; a limited number of free health screenings for colon cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and osteoporosis (a two-hour fast is necessary for the diabetes screening); and booths with free information and give-aways regarding a variety of topics. Anyone interested in the free health screenings will be given a time to report for the screening sometime during the event. Light refreshments also will be available.
