Cancer Survivors honored on Special Day by Hospitals of Community Healthcare System

MUNSTER/EAST CHICAGO/HOBART — Hundreds of cancer survivors, families and friends across the United States gather on the first Sunday in June each year to show unity in triumph over cancer. In Northwest Indiana on Sunday, June 5, the hospitals of Community Healthcare System are hosting simultaneous celebrations to honor these local heroes on National Cancer Survivors Day®.

Sponsored by the Cancer Resource Centre, a support program of the Community Cancer Research Foundation, a National Cancer Survivors Day event will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at The Edward P. Robinson Community Veterans Memorial Park in Munster, 9710 Calumet Ave. Life coach Cindy Giles, CPC, ELI-MP will lend her words of inspiration to those currently in cancer treatment and/or cancer remission. Drawing from her experience as a breast cancer survivor and knowledge and skills as a coach, Giles will detail how to move forward after diagnosis with passion and purpose and live life to the fullness, with no regrets. Healing Touch, Reiki, Chair Massage and Yoga demonstrations are also part of the afternoon’s activities.

A“Celebration of Life” is scheduled at St. Catherine Hospital. The event takes place from 3 to 5 p.m. in the professional office building conference room of the hospital, 4321 Fir St. in East Chicago. Musical entertainment, relaxation, refreshments and giveaways highlight the afternoon.

St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart will host a Cancer Survivors Day celebration from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Waterfall Café Courtyard, 1500 S. Lake Park Ave. (accessible through the West entrance). Included in the afternoon’s activities are an old-fashioned ice cream social, massages courtesy of Heavenly Hands, refreshments, music, and door prizes.
