Hospitals celebrate/honor Cancer Survivors
Hundreds of cancer survivors, families and friends across the United States gather on the first Sunday in June each year to show unity in triumph over cancer. In Northwest Indiana on Sunday, June 3, the hospitals of Community Healthcare System and the Community Cancer Research Foundation will honor these local heroes in two separate celebrations as part of National Cancer Survivors Day®.
The Cancer Resource Centre in Munster, a support program of the Research Foundation, together with St. Catherine Hospital, invite cancer survivors, their families and friends to a regional celebration of National Survivors Day. The event will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at The Edward P. Robinson Community Veterans Memorial Park in Munster, 9710 Calumet Ave.
Activities planned for the afternoon include Yoga, complimentary chair massages and Reiki demonstrations. Musical entertainment will be provided by The Darren Zancan Band.
Survivors will have an opportunity to share their own personal cancer journeys with those in attendance. They also will be able to contribute to an ongoing project, signing “greetings of hope” cards that are sent to newly diagnosed cancer patients throughout the year.
St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart will host a Cancer Survivors Day celebration from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Waterfall Café Courtyard, 1500 S. Lake Park Ave. (accessible through the West entrance). Included in the afternoon’s activities are an old-fashioned ice cream social, massages courtesy of Heavenly Hands, refreshments, music, and door prizes.
All Cancer Survivors Day programs hosted by the hospitals of Community Healthcare System are FREE and open to the public. Registration is necessary before June 1 as space is limited. Call 219-836-3477 or toll-free 866-836-3477 for more information and to register.
