Football Hall of Famer Marv Levy heads up community education program about prostate cancer

The Community Hospital Cancer Research Foundation Inc., will welcome pro Football Hall of Famer Marv Levy for an inspirational and informative talk about surviving prostate cancer and moving on with a successful life.

“A Winning Game Plan: Understanding and Surviving Prostate Cancer” also will feature Leonard Gabrielle Gomella, M.D., who will discuss the latest advances in prostate cancer treatments and research.

In his talk, Levy will discuss how the strategies of mental preparation, training and strengthening of spirit served him well on the football field, but also as he faced his toughest foe: prostate cancer. He will share how, with single-minded determination and the support of friends and family, he overcame his disease. He now coaches others to develop a winning game plan in pursuit of a strong body and a healthy lifestyle.

Levy has etched his place in the hallowed halls of professional football history as the only NFL coach in history to lead his team to four consecutive Super Bowl appearances. Twice voted Coach of the Year by United Press International, Levy ended his 12-year tenure as head coach of the Buffalo Bills with 123 victories, and 11 postseason wins. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

Leonard Gabrielle Gomella, M.D., F.A.C.S., is a professor of prostate cancer, Chairman of the Department of Urology and Director of Urologic Oncology at the Kimmel Cancer Center, Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Gomella will discuss the latest research and promising new therapies being advanced today in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Gomella is board certified with the American Urological Association and the American Board of Urology. He received his B.A. in biology from Queens College, City University of New York, and his M.D. from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He completed an intern in surgery, and was a general surgery resident, urology resident and chief urology resident all at the University of Kentucky. Gomella completed a fellowship in urologic oncology, surgery branch, at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland.

Gomella has an impressive history of awards, honors and appointments to professional organizations, committees and journals. His research interests include prostate, bladder and kidney cancers, and a focus on new minimally-invasive techniques in urological oncology.

Andrej Zajac, M.D., Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at Community Hospital and St. Catherine Hospital will provide introductions and speak briefly about the importance of early detection of prostate cancer. M. Nabil Shabeeb, M.D., general surgeon at Community Hospital, also will speak briefly about the new Cancer Resource Centre in Munster.

Levy and the other speakers will join guests for refreshments and a reception after the talk.

“A Winning Game Plan: Understanding and Surviving Prostate Cancer” will take place from 6-9 p.m., Oct. 1 at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road, Munster.
