Dinner dance to raise funds for local cardiovascular research

MERRILLVILLE — Continuing their commitment to improving the health of the residents of Northwest Indiana, the St. Helen’s Philoptochos Ladies Society, Chapter 2034, of Merrillville, will sponsor a dinner dance on Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Hellenic Cultural Center, 8000 Madison St. in Merrillville, to benefit The Foundation for Cardiovascular Research, a Service of Community Healthcare System.

The Foundation for Cardiovascular Research is working to improve access area residents have to the latest advances being made in heart disease. The Foundation works through the hospital of the Community Healthcare System, which includes St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, Community Hospital in Munster and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart.

Philoptochos means “friends of the poor.” The Ladies Society is a philanthropic organization of Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral and has, with the Daughters of Penelope Chapter 81, raised $25,000 in recent years to benefit breast and ovarian cancer research conducted by The Community Hospital Cancer Research Foundation, Inc. Over the years The Ladies Society has also contributed time, supplies and funds to dozens of other organizations ranging from the Ross Township Food Pantry to UNICEF.

“They like to help various causes,” says Dinner Dance Co-Chair Angie Bravos of The Ladies Society. “They chose the heart research for this function because heart disease is the number one killer of men and women.”

Hors d’oeuvres will be served at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7. Entertainment will be provided by Takis. Three raffles will be available: a benefit raffle, basket raffle and 50/50 raffle. Dinner tickets are $40 per person, $75 per couple and $300 per table of eight. Advanced registration is required by calling (219)663-1857 after 4:30 p.m.
