Stroke Center of Excellence at St. Catherine Hospital
The Stroke team at St. Catherine Hospital works together
to develop a specialized plan of care for each patient from
admission through recovery and post discharge
At St. Catherine Hospital, our specialized Stroke Response Team works together to diagnose and develop a plan of care to help patients who suffer strokes and those who are at risk, live longer, fuller lives. This team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, clinical nurse specialists, registered nurses, therapy and rehabilitation professionals gets involved with the patient and their family from their first point of contact, often in the Emergency Department.
St. Catherine Hospital remains at the forefront of cardiovascular disease treatment, stroke care, and prevention. Our Stroke Program's state-of-the-art acute stroke management focuses on prevention of future strokes with a combination of medications and changes in lifestyle. By decreasing the risks for this debilitating condition, we can help improve quality of life.
When it comes to a stroke, every second counts. A stroke takes place as the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or severely limited, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. Early treatment can make a big difference helping to limit damage to the brain and the potential for stroke complications. With access to some of the most advanced diagnostic technologies, including a state-of-the-art 64-slice CT located next to the Emergency Department, our stroke team works together to diagnose a stroke and begin treatments as quickly as possible.
Our stroke patients benefit from individualized care that aims to optimize recovery and maximize independence. Members of the Stroke team meet on a regular basis to review care guidelines and treatment regimens and analyze quality measures. The Stroke team is facilitated by dedicated Stroke Program Coordinator Jill Phelps, RN. Medical Director of the unit is Dr. Andrea DeLeo.
St. Catherine Hospital's new Stroke Unit, Intensive and Intermediate Care Units, as well as the Acute Rehabilitation Center provide specialized care to help stroke patients to recover with fewer complications and with less time in the hospital. An important part of stroke care at St. Catherine Hospital, is the assessment each patient is provided to determine their continuing care needs after leaving the hospital. Supported by the expertise of our Acute Rehabilitation Center, a free support group, and stroke prevention education programs offer additional resources to patients and their families.
