St. Catherine Hospital offers Digital Mammogram Technology

EAST CHICAGO: Women who undergo routine mammograms at St. Catherine Hospital now have access to the newest diagnostic technology available.

Digital mammography offers an advantage over conventional mammography technology for some women. “In a recent study of patients, when they compared film-screen mammography to digital, it was superior to film-screen in a certain women — mostly women with dense breasts, which would include pre-menopausal women,” said Thomas Hoess, MD, Medical Director of the Department of Radiology at St. Catherine Hospital.

St. Catherine Hospital is part of the Community Healthcare System which includes Community Hospital in Munster and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart. All three hospitals offer digital mammogram technology and digital images can be transferred electronically between hospitals to facilitate consultation between physicians.

The radiologist can view and manipulate the images on high-resolution computer monitors that enhance visualization of the structures within the breast tissue. They can adjust brightness and contrast and zoom in on specific areas to help detect small calcifications, masses and other changes that may be signs of early cancer. This ability may eliminate the need for additional imaging and increased exposure to radiation.

Over the years, significant investments have been made in the radiology department at St. Catherine Hospital. Department director, Roberto Gonzalez contends that, “even the best equipment can’t fight disease without the right healthcare professionals. At St Catherine Hospital that means the best technology is in the hands of the right people. We have state-of-the-art technology throughout our healthcare system. That coupled with very good doctors, technologists, nurses and support staff - that’s how we save lives here.”
