St. Catherine Hospital Center for Diabetes earns ADA re-accreditation

Because of its commitment to promote diabetes awareness and support educational outreach, St. Catherine Hospital’s Center for Diabetes self-management program has been awarded continued recognition from the American Diabetes Association.

Applying for the recognition assures approved education programs have met the national standards for diabetes self-management education programs. Programs that achieve recognition status have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide state-of-the-art information about diabetes management. Community Hospital’s program in Munster holds this national recognition as well.

Such structured programs teach patients how to manage diabetes in their daily lives. Patients work on their individual plan with a team of nurse educators, dietitians and their doctors. Exercise education and support group information are also a part of the curriculum.

“The accreditation process gives professionals who are committed to diabetes education and awareness, a national standard by which to measure the quality of the services they provide," says Dr. Jaime Ruiz-Montero, M.D., medical director of the Center for Diabetes at St. Catherine Hospital.

The Diabetes Center combines is a well-rounded program that combines education, exercise, nutrition and a special Diabetes outreach program called STOP Diabetes.
STOP Diabetes program takes the education sessions out of the hospital setting and into local partner churches. The goal of STOP Diabetes is twofold — to promote early detection through education and blood sugar screening and to educate individuals diagnosed with diabetes about modifying their lifestyles so they can have a fuller quality of life.

Partner churches host several education sessions that are open to the congregation and the general public. The pastor is provided with diabetes information related to an upcoming topic and he presents it to the congregation during a service and encourages them to attend. Church liaisons work with St. Catherine Hospital to schedule education sessions and screenings and promote attendance within the community. Scheduling is flexible and based on the needs of the partner churches.

Topics include: disease process, eating right, exercise, heart health, emotional effects.
