St. Catherine Hospital to hold open house and blessing ceremony for new rehab unit
After a successful soft opening in December of the new Rehabilitation Center at St. Catherine Hospital, hospital staff invites the public and area media to an open house and dedication ceremony to mark the hospital’s first major expansion since joining Community Healthcare System.
The blessing and dedication will take place at 1:30 p.m., Thursday at St. Catherine Hospital, 4321 Fir St., East Chicago. Tours of the facility will follow until 4 p.m.
Construction on the new $1.6 million Rehabilitation Center at St. Catherine began just weeks after the East Chicago hospital was acquired by Community Foundation of Norwest Indiana, Inc., which owns and operates Community Hospital in Munster, St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart, and St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago. Together, the three hospitals form Community Healthcare System, the region’s largest healthcare provider.
The new Rehabilitation Center is an 18-bed, 11,815-square-foot rehabilitative care unit with state-of-the-art equipment and services, modeled after the rehabilitation center at Community Hospital. The unit has 10 private rooms and eight semi-private (shared) beds, and offers important service to patients who otherwise would have to travel outside of their community for rehabilitative care.
Patients in rehabilitation who are learning to gain independence for living now have access to all the activities of daily living, including an apartment-like setting with a washer and dryer, training kitchen, restroom and living area. The center offers 1,000 square feet of activity and dining space, a fully-equipped gym for therapy and exercise, conference space for family and caregivers, and offices.
The expansion at St. Catherine Hospital has provided for 25 new jobs.
