As part of an ongoing commitment to provide new and advanced services to East Chicago and surrounding communities, St. Catherine Hospital has opened a new pediatric unit to care for the area’s smallest patients, and the parents and family who love them.

While the unit began accepting patients in June, a formal open house and blessing ceremony for hospital staff and the media will take place from 2 - 3:30 p.m. Aug. 20. at St. Catherine Hospital, 4321 Fir St., East Chicago. The public is invited to tour the unit from 3:30 - 5 p.m.

The new pediatric unit was relocated from a previous floor and remodeled to now include nine private rooms, each with its own bath and comfortable accommodations for parents to stay overnight. A centrally-located nurses’ station provides for immediate and constant care, and a special child safety alarm system has been integrated for added security and peace of mind.

A playroom marked with bright colors and filled with toys and books greets visitors at the entrance to the unit. The playroom is for patients and siblings to use during visits.

The remodeling project marks the third major investment at St. Catherine Hospital since the hospital became part of Community Healthcare System in October 2001, joining it with Community Hospital in Munster and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart. Since then, Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana, Inc., has invested millions of dollars into the facility to update it, provide new services to the community, and open new units. The new Rehabilitation Center at St. Catherine Hospital opened in December, and construction is ongoing now for a new energy system to help the hospital cool itself more evenly.
