St. Mary Medical Center welcomes well-established internal medicine physicians to Care Network

St. Mary Medical Center welcomes to the hospital’s care network Uday Kathaiyan, M.D., and Mary Tilak, M.D. - two internal medicine physicians whose philosophies center on preventive medicine and compassionate, convenient caring of the whole person. The physicians are now seeing patients at the Merrillville Family Health Center, 300 W. 80th Place, Merrillville.

Mary Tilak, M.D.
Tilak practices internal medicine with a strong focus on preventive cardiology. “Obesity is increasing in epidemic proportions in the U.S., leading to significant increase in premature heart attack and stroke — the number one cause of death in men and women,” Tilak says. “As a well-informed internist practicing evidence-based medicine, my commitment is to improve the awareness about this major health risk in our community.”

Tilak treats those with existing risk factors such as high blood pressure and cholesterol, and diabetes. The goal, she says, is to have her patients attain the acceptable national guidelines and reduce their risk for further disease. She also is a family doctor who treats general illnesses such as muscle sprains, migraine and viral infections, and provides pelvic exams and pap smear screenings for women. In addition, she counsels extensively on lifestyle modifications regarding healthy diet and exercise.

“Most importantly, people should know that I am a dependable, hard-working and easily-accessible physician who will not hesitate to pursue ideas that will improve upon the quality of patient care and ultimately help my patients get what is rightfully theirs — a normal everyday life.”

Tilak received her medical degree from the Government General Hospital in Madras, India, and completed her residency in internal medicine at UIC/Michael Reese in Chicago, IL. She is a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, a member of the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association, and is licensed in Indiana and Illinois. Tilak lives with her husband and three-year-old son in Munster.

Uday Kathaiyan, M.D.
Kathaiyan practices internal medicine with a strong focus on disease prevention. He recognizes that with today’s Baby Boomer generation entering their senior years, it’s important that they keep tabs on their health. “Everyone should have regular physicals, particularly those ages 40 and older so we can capture their diseases early and ward off further complications. It’s always better to prevent than cure, but I’m here to do both.”

As an internal medicine physician, Kathaiyan is skilled in the treatment of multiple organ systems. “Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and their complications are the biggest threats affecting the general population. Most of us believe that we are healthy as we feel fine, but an annual physical exam may reveal the contrary. Our goal is early diagnosis, treatment so we can totally avoid the disabling complications.” Kathaiyan offers internal medicine care primarily, but also sees patients for early cancer screenings and simple office surgical procedures.

Kathaiyan received his medical degree from the Bharathidasan University in India, and completed his internal medicine residency at Ravenswood Hospital in Chicago, IL. He also completed a transitional residency at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, IL. He is board certified with the American Board of Internal Medicine. Kathaiyan resides in Munster with his wife and four-year-old son.

Both Tilak and Kathaiyan offer convenient hours for patients at the Merrillville Family Health Center. Tilak sees patients (list hours). Kathaiyan sees patients (list hours).
