St. Mary Medical Center opens Women’s Diagnostic Center

St. Mary Medical Center will soon open the new Women’s Diagnostic Center — a place where women can receive a level of care not previously available in this part of Northwest Indiana. With state-of-the-art technology, the Center is dedicated to the wellbeing of women and supported by a fellowship-trained dedicated breast radiologist.

A free public open house for the Women’s Diagnostic Center will be from 11 a.m. — 2 p.m., Oct. 22 at the Center, located at 300 W. 61st Ave., Hobart, just west of the St. Mary Medical Center main hospital. The program begins with a blessing and dedication, followed by guided tours with the Center’s staff, free giveaways, health information, food and refreshments and chances to win free screening mammograms and bone density tests. Registration for the event is required in advance by calling 219-836-3477 or toll free 1-866-836-3477.

The Women’s Diagnostic Center is a service of Community Healthcare System, comprising St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart, St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago and Community Hospital in Munster. The Center is dedicated to providing a tranquil, private place where women can address their specific healthcare diagnostic needs and be supported by a staff dedicated to women’s health issues. The setting aims to be as comfortable as one’s own home, with a private entrance and private portion of the building set aside for women’s care. The rest of the building houses the Center for Imaging and Radiation Oncology.

The new Women’s Diagnostic Center provides mammography (both diagnostic and screening), minimally-invasive breast biopsies (sparing major surgery to diagnose breast disease), bone density testing, ultrasound, breast ultrasound, and a resource room where women can consult literature about their health. Nurse Practitioner Karen Mannino, together with fellowship-trained breast radiologist Mary Nicholson, M.D., are the core of the patient care team, providing same- day diagnostic mammography readings and breast consultations regularly. The Center also is supported by the same well-trained radiologists who read tests across Community Healthcare System, further supporting and upholding the standard of care patients have come to expect from Community Healthcare System hospitals.

To register for the open house, call 219-836-3477 or toll free 1-866-836-3477.
