St. Mary Medical Center ranks as Top Hospital with Nurses

St. Mary Medical Center has been recognized as a top hospital for health care professionals in the field of nursing, according to an Advance for Nurses newsmagazine survey. The announcement was made October 13 as a result of the magazine’s second annual Readers’ Choice survey that spans the Greater Chicago and metropolitan areas of Wisconsin and Indiana.

Voting was open to RNs who ranked a selected hospital in areas that matter to nurses: quality of care; organizational culture; professional development; communication and retention efforts. St. Mary Medical Center scored high in all categories.

“We express our deepest appreciation and sincere gratitude to all of our nurses who make significant contributions on a daily basis that impact the lives of the patients and families we serve,” said Tammie Finn, RN, MS, Chief Nursing Officer for St. Mary Medical Center.

“Because of the efforts of our extraordinary nursing staff, St. Mary Medical Center has become a leader in patient safety, satisfaction, and quality care delivered here in Northwest Indiana,” said Hospital Administrator Janice Ryba.

Excellence in patient care that has been attributed to the hospital’s healthcare team — including its nursing staff — has been affirmed by several outside sources at both the state and national level during the past several weeks.

St. Mary Medical Center has been recognized by HealthGrades®, the leading independent healthcare ratings company for the fourth consecutive year as a 2008 Distinguished Hospital for Patient Safety™, reflecting a consistent performance among the top five percent of hospitals nationally for patient safety outcomes. It is one of only 58 hospitals in the country to achieve this distinction four years in a row, 2005-2008. St. Mary Medical Center is one of only 249 hospitals out of nearly 5,000 to receive this recognition in 2008.

St. Mary Medical Center also received on October 14 top five-star ratings for quality in its Overall Joint Replacement and Total Knee Replacement service lines by HealthGrades® for three years in a row — 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Last month, names of the 2008 BKD Indiana Excellence Awards finalists were released by BKD, LLP; Indiana Business magazine; National City Bank of Indiana and Bose McKinney & Evans in Indianapolis.

The awards program, in its 13th year, recognizes business excellence through the improvement of a product, service or business practice and the positive impact it has on the organization and the surrounding community. St. Mary Medical Center is being recognized for improvements in patient care by providing digital mammography screening services with same-day results.
