HOBART — The Women’s Diagnostic Team at St. Mary Medical Center was a recognized finalist at the 2008 BKD Indiana Excellence Awards held in Indianapolis on November 19th. Honored for their groundbreaking program in Same-Day Mammography Results, St. Mary joined four other Indiana health organizations recognized by Indiana Business magazine, title sponsor BKD, LLP, and National City, for business excellence.

“We’re proud of our team of professionals who are dedicated to improving healthcare in our Indiana communities,” said Janice Ryba, administrator of St. Mary Medical Center. “With our new digital mammography technology available, our medical staff and diagnostic team began to rethink the process of what patients go through during this experience. The result was removing the anxiety of waiting days or even weeks for mammogram results, and replacing it with promptness and the patient’s comfort of knowing results right away.”

To make same-visit mammogram results a reality, the hospital invested in new Pen-rad digital imaging technology and additional resources needed to allow radiologists to read exams while women were still present at their appointments. The new technology allowed radiologists to quickly “transcribe” their own reports on a computer rather than use traditional dictation. The results are then printed and presented to the patient and the referring physician. If follow-up testing is necessary, it can often be done immediately or within a few days.

For patient Chris Rearick of West Lafayette, making the drive to Hobart for her mammogram was worth the time. “I recently relocated and had a mammogram in another facility,” she said. “I was shocked that I did not know my results for three weeks. When they said the mammogram would have to be repeated due to an abnormal reading, I promptly decided I would return to the Women’s Diagnostic Center at St. Mary Medical Center. When I got there, every staff member I interacted with was superb! The service was excellent and I was given peace of mind that very day.”

“Only a select few facilities in Chicagoland and none in Northwest Indiana besides the hospitals of the Community Healthcare System can match the full scope of this service,” added Ryba. “To compete in this marketplace, our professionals know that they must go above and beyond in providing service excellence. Our competitors are still taking three, four or more days to deliver these results. We’re proud of our physicians and staff whose dedication and commitment to our patients allows St. Mary Medical Center to provide this breadth of service in one day. Not only is that efficient healthcare, it is compassionate healthcare for our patients as well.”

The BKD Indiana Business Excellence Award, in its 13th year, recognizes business excellence through the improvement of a product, service or business practice and the positive impact it has on the organization and the surrounding community. This is the second consecutive year St. Mary Medical Center was honored. Last year, the hospital was named a finalist for its improvements in emergency heart attack care.
