St. Mary Medical Center Designated as Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement

HOBART, IN — St. Mary Medical Center’s Joint Academy has been designated as a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement. Blue Distinction® is a designation awarded by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality healthcare. St. Mary Medical Center is the only hospital in Northwest Indiana to achieve this designation.

The designation is based on rigorous, evidence-based, objective selection criteria established in collaboration with expert physicians’ and medical organizations’ recommendations. Its goal is to help consumers find quality specialty care on a consistent basis, while enabling and encouraging healthcare professionals to improve the overall quality and delivery of care nationwide

As a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement, the Joint Academy at St. Mary Medical Center has demonstrated a commitment to quality care and offers comprehensive inpatient knee and hip replacement services, including total knee replacement, total hip replacement and hip resurfacing.

“The Joint Academy has an established reputation for producing the best possible outcomes for patients undergoing hip or knee replacement procedures,” said Janice Ryba, CEO, St. Mary Medical Center. “It’s rewarding to have our efforts recognized by the objective, results-oriented panel of experts who determine these designations.”

“Our goal at the Joint Academy is to provide exceptional patient experiences with superior outcomes,” added Scott Andrews, M.D., chief of medical staff at St. Mary Medical Center and medical director of the Joint Academy. “To be selected as a Blue Distinction Center in this area is affirmation of all our efforts, but more importantly, it demonstrates the success of our care and treatment of patients undergoing hip or knee replacement procedures.”

Medical facilities voluntarily submit clinical data to establish they meet selection criteria. The selection criteria used in designating Blue Distinction Centers for Knee and Hip Replacement includes:

• an established knee and hip replacement program, performing required annual volumes for certain procedures (e.g., at least 100 total hip and total knee joint replacement surgeries per year, with a minimum of 25 each total hip and total knee replacements)
• an experienced knee and hip replacement surgery team, including surgeons with board certification, subspecialty fellowship training, and required case volumes for knee and hip replacement procedures
• an established acute care inpatient facility, including intensive care, emergency care and a full range of patient support services
• full accreditation by a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)-deemed national accreditation organization
• a comprehensive quality management program
• pre-operative patient education
• processes that support transitions of care
• clinical outcomes that meet objective thresholds for specific procedures such as complication rates and length of stay.

“Blue Distinction puts a high value on research and evidence-based health and medical information,” said Allan Korn, MD, Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association Chief Medical Officer. “Blue Distinction Centers show our commitment to working with doctors and hospitals in communities across the country to identify leading institutions that meet clinically validated quality standards and deliver better overall outcomes in patient care.”
