Letter from the CEO

 JoAnn Birdzell, CEO
St. Catherine Hospital

Hello, and welcome to the St. Catherine Hospital section of our website.

As a Community Healthcare System hospital affiliate, we are pleased to share our story about the many services, programs and five star care we offer to residents and visitors in the East Chicago, Hammond, Highland, Gary, Griffith, Whiting and surrounding unincorporated areas in Lake County.

You will also learn about the Community Health Care Network and how you may access one of our associated medical providers, who are ready to serve you in a hospital location or outpatient facility that's close to where you live or work.

Here, we have one simple rule: Make people and their good health matter.

And, we do.

Founded by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ and leading local businessmen in 1928, our acute care hospital today is distinguished as a premier hospital in the nation for the outstanding care with outstanding outcomes it provides to patients.

The legacy of firsts that began decades ago in one of the oldest industrial "melting pot" cities of Northwest Indiana continues today because of St. Catherine Hospital's commitment to make medical strides in care. medical procedures and technology while serving people from all walks of life.

In 2015-2106, alone, our hospital has achieved these notable awards: A five star rating on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid's Hospital Compare website; Healthgrades 2016 Outstanding Patient Experience; Leapfrog Group "A" rating in Hospital Safety; The Joint Commission's Gold Seal rating -- a top accreditation -- for Primary Stroke and Inpatient Diabetes Care; Chest Pain Society's "Cycle Five" certification; and the Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield rating for Cardiac Care and Maternal Services.

We earned the commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for Acute Rehab with a Specialty in Stroke.

Recently, the American Heart Association's Get With the Guidelines -- Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: Stroke (SM) Honor Roll Elite award. These quality measures are designed to help hospital teams follow the most up-to-date, evidence based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients.

We believe our distinction as a premier hospital in the nation is not only rooted in our attention to quality, but to our sense of place.

Teamwork, dedication, competence and compassion -- when coordinated and focused on patient care -- lead to amazing outcomes, such as we experience here at St. Catherine Hospital.

While the past two years have brought notable distinctions to St. Catherine Hospital, and the Community Healthcare System, we've also been expanding with two new Behavioral Health Services inpatient units for adults and older adults. We've expanded our Catheter Care Unit and our Emergency Department waiting and triage areas. An upgraded Intensive Care Unit is set to open in Fall 2016 and we hope to expand our Outpatient Retail Pharmacy and Anti Coagulation Clinic in early 2017.

The Whiting Community Health Center, now entering its second year in the downtown Whiting Community, is gaining momentum. Our attention remains focused on Hessville Family Care Center in Hammond, where family medical needs are served on an outpatient basis in a convenient location across from Morton High School.

Taken together, these efforts reinforce St. Catherine Hospital's commitment to outstanding customer service and its loyalty to a community we've served for decades.

We welcome you to visit St. Catherine Hospital,  home to generations of families we've known and nurtured for many years.
