WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY

FACTS AND MYTHS

Bariatric surgery is more dangerous than obesity.

Fact: As your weight increases, your life expectancy decreases. Individuals with severe obesity typically suffer from a number of life-threatening medical conditions that greatly increase their risk of death—including hypertension, type 2 diabetes and more. However, according to data from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the risk of death within 30 days following bariatric surgery is 0.13% or 1 out of 1000 patients. Patients have a higher risk of death after a gallbladder or hip replacement surgery. Studies continue to show that the risk of death from any cause is considerably less for bariatric patients over time than for individuals suffering from severe obesity who have never had the surgery. (ASMBS, 2019)

Most people who have surgery eventually gain the weight back.

Fact: Weight loss surgery is a life changing decision that requires life-long choices. Up to 50% of patients may regain a small amount of weight within 2 years of their surgery. Healthy 4 Life’s holistic approach proactively addresses every patient’s chance of gaining weight, and positions them in the best possible setting with weight-loss tools and support that follow long after surgery.

Surgery is the easy way out. Weight loss can happen with the right diet and exercise.

Fact: The National Institutes of Health Experts Panel recognize that long-term weight loss is nearly impossible for those affected by severe obesity through any means other than bariatric surgery. Individuals tend to overestimate the effectiveness of diet and exercise alone and underestimate the effectiveness of medical and surgical treatments. Almost 60% of Americans are currently trying to lose weight, and 1 in 5 have made more than 20 unsuccessful attempts to do it through diet and exercise alone. As mentioned in response to Myth 2, weight loss surgery is a life changing decision, and it isn’t easy. However, it’s a medically proven tool that enables every individual to be Healthy 4 Life.
