Concussion Care

Specialized Care for a Special Condition

Concussions occur when there is trauma to the head or spine that results in temporary disturbance of brain function. If a concussion is suspected, seeking medical care as soon as possible is important to make a full recovery and decrease the chance of developing long-term problems. Our medical team at Community Healthcare System consists of specially trained physicians, physical therapists and athletic trainers experienced in evaluating and treating concussions and provides individualized treatment options to patients.

Recover to Your Fullest

Taking the time to heal is vital to recovering from the trauma of concussion. That’s why our specially trained physicians, physical therapists and athletic trainers begin treating your concussion as soon as possible.

Diagnosis of Concussion

Our hospitals use ImPACT testing to diagnose concussions. Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing is a 20 minute computerized evaluation that allows our specialists to have the most accurate understanding of your condition so they can recommend the best individualized treatment plan for you.

Treatment of Concussion

When treated properly, most people fully recover from a single concussion. Repeated concussions, however, may lead to longer recoveries and cause post-concussion symptoms or disabilities, especially in children.

Our goal is to help you return to daily activities including work, sports and school. A team of specially trained and certified physicians and athletic trainers work collaboratively with your primary care physician so that your treatment doesn’t end until you’re fully healed. We monitor all your symptoms, including balance-related issues through advanced Sway Balance Testing, so that we can treat them as soon as we catch them.

By creating individualized treatment options that take your lifestyle into account, our team makes it easier for you to mend with highest chance of a full recovery. Our facilities provide academic accommodations for students so that concussions don’t get in the way of success.

Athletic Training Program

Community Healthcare System employs certified athletic trainers who provide preventative services and therapeutic intervention of sports-related injuries and medical conditions for local high school athletes and Purdue University Calumet students. Since our athletic trainers are on-site at sporting events, they are able to assess and evaluate injuries immediately and respond accordingly.
