Silver Sneakers Fitness Program

Any Color Gym Shoe Will Do

SilverSneakers is a fun, energizing and award-winning program to help seniors and adults with mobility issues lose weight, increase energy and overall good health. Classes combine physical activity with socialization, education and exercise.

Created in 1992, the SilverSneakers® Fitness Program is a national preventive care program offered by the Cardiac Rehabilitation Department of St. Catherine Hospital. Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness® is also available at the Valparaiso YMCA through a partnership with St. Mary Medical Center.

Program offerings vary by location, but there is one common denominator:

SilverSneakers® fitness is a great way to meet new friends, reconnect with neighbors and former co-workers you may not have seen in years.

The classes will increase your flexibility, muscle tone and joints. Over time, it will strengthen your heart, help control or prevent diabetes and stroke, trim you down and keep lethargy and depression at bay.

How It Works

The SilverSneakers® Fitness Program at St. Catherine Hospital complements the hospital’s cardiac and stroke program, Center for Diabetes outpatient program and other good health initiatives for Medicare-eligible adults, as well as people of all ages with limited mobility.

This structured, 45-minute to 1-hour strength-training program is open to patients and the public. It is safer and less intimidating than full-scale gyms, because:

  • Classes are led by certified health care professionals.
  • Low-impact workouts build muscle strength and agility over time.
  • Exercises can be done using a chair for sitting or balance.
  • Hand-weights, bands and balls are used to gently work muscle groups.
  • Exercise physiologists, nurses and cardiac rehab staff are onsite.
  • Your blood pressure and heart rate are checked before your workout.

Enrollment includes Mon-Friday access, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., in The Fitness Center at St. Catherine Hospital.

The Fitness Center is a full-service gym in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Department with treadmills, arm and leg machines, upper body exercise equipment, free weights and a SilverSneakers workout room. For information and class times, call:
(219) 392-7924.

Before enrolling, you must obtain a doctor's prescription. The program requires a two-hour orientation, which includes a physical assessment costing $45. Following acceptance to the program, members pay a $25 monthly fee.

Because SilverSneakers is a national preventive care initiative, monthly fees may be absorbed for some members by Medicare and Healthways-affiliated insurance providers, including: AARP Medical Complete by United Healthcare; AARP Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan; Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Harmony Health Plan of Illinois; and Humana.

The Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness® program, offered through St. Mary Medical Center, is available to specific insurance plan holders of Humana, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, and AARP Medicare Supplement. The program offers you with a unique opportunity to use the Valparaiso Family YMCA and our four, specially-designed SilverSneakers® classes.

The classes -- SilverSneakers Classic, Cardio Circuit, Silver Splash and Yoga -- focus on improving flexibility, balance, and endurance for older adults.

Find out if you qualify for a Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness® membership with a visit to the Valparaiso YMCA, Monday-Friday 8:30-11 a.m. or Tuesday-Friday 1-5 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call: (219) 462-4185.
