Electrophysiology (EP) Lab

Cardiac electrophysiology (EP) is the study of the heart’s electrical system to diagnose and treat abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias). The EP Lab is staffed with full-time registered nurses, radiology technicians, electrophysiologists, and cardiologists as well as anesthesia services for ultimate patient care.

Electrophysiology study (EP study) involves the insertion of electrode catheters into the heart. EP studies diagnose heart rhythm abnormalities which may need medication, further testing or procedures such as ablation or implantation of a pacemaker or defibrillator. Ablation procedures are minimally invasive procedures performed with catheters to correct specific areas within the heart that are generating abnormal heart rhythms. Pacemaker procedures involve the implantation of a device to treat slow heart rhythms (bradycardia). Community Hospital offers the new FDA-approved Medtronic Micra leadless pacemaker which requires no incision or skin pocket to implant. Implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD) procedures involve the implantation of a device to treat rapid life-threatening heart rhythms.

Procedures provided at the Community Hospital and St. Mary Medical Center Electrophysiology Labs include:

  • Diagnostic Electrophysiology Studies
  • Catheter Ablation with 3D mapping capabilities as well as Thermocool and radiofrequency ablation therapy
  • Pacemaker Implantation
  • Cardiac Defibrillator Implantation
  • Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (Biventricular pacemaker or defibrillator implantation)
  • Device Lead Extraction
  • Cardiac Loop Recorder Implantation and Explant
  • Arrhythmia Ablation for SVT, VT, Atrial Flutter, Atrial Fibrillation, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome
  • Tilt Table Testing
  • Event Recorders
  • Cardioversions
  • Non-Invasive Programmed Studies for defibrillator patients (NIPS)

ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY CLINIC (EP CLINIC)

Community Hospital and St. Mary Medical Center’s Electrophysiology Clinics provide patients with the opportunity for ongoing follow up for all arrhythmia conditions. Consultation or follow up is available with a Cardiac Electrophysiologist on staff through the clinic. The clinic also offers device management services for pacemakers, defibrillators, and loop recorders - including remote monitoring of these devices.
