Pioneering Breakthroughs in Treatment
At Community Healthcare System, our mission is to improve the quality of your life by decreasing the burden of urologic disease or life-changing conditions through excellent clinical care.
Our urology team is equipped with the latest medical knowledge, diagnostic and surgical technology -- including robotic and minimally invasive surgical equipment -- to provide you with specialized, innovative treatment.
We are qualified to diagnose and treat urologic conditions which include prostate and bladder cancer, bladder prolapse, blood in the urine, erectile dysfunction, painful bladder syndrome, overactive bladder and swelling of the prostate gland.
Always seeking breakthroughs in urologic health, we offer new Blue Light Cystoscopy™ with Cysview technology at Community Hospital to accurately identify bladder tumors and detect cancer at an early stage. The da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System at St. Mary Medical Center and Community Hospital is another technology we offer as a premium provider of prostate cancer care, gallbladder removal, and urology care.
As a healthcare provider who focuses on taking the led in new technology, we also strive to offer the latest treatments in urology care.
St. Mary Medical Center is one of few medical facilities in Northwest Indiana offering Cyrotherapy to prostate cancer patients. The procedure, performed under general anesthesia in an outpatient setting, freezes tissue in the prostate and a small margin of surrounding tissue to offer men the possibility of being cured with fewer side effects than other treatment.
Services and Procedures
With an emphasis on service and compassionate care, we offer:
- Robotic & Minimally Invasive Surgery for cancer of the bladder and kidneys
- Minimally Invasive Procedures
- Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery and Female Urology
- Stone diseases and removal
- Urinary tract infections and incontinence
- Male Sexual Function Services and Infertility
- Pediatric Urology Services
The da Vinci® Robot Surgical System – SiHD™ was introduced at Community Hospital in 2006 to remove the gallbladder of patients with a single-incision in the belly button within about an hour. Since then, the robotic system has led the way in surgical cancer treatment.
- Prostate cancer procedures
- Cystectomy, a procedure surgeons recommend to treat cancer in the bladder
- Nephrectomy, full and partial kidney removal
- Gallbladder removal
- Minimally invasive procedures and specialties in gynecology, oncology, urology and advanced laparoscopic and general surgeries
With the da Vinci, surgeons can perform medical procedures that are done laparoscopically with greater accuracy and fewer complications. The system might be compared to painting with brush strokes. The robot's every move is controlled by your doctor or surgeon with a camera that magnifies the image, and provides an accurate, 3-D picture of the surgical site.
Benefits include a shorter hospital stay; less scarring and risk of infection; less blood loss, faster recovery.
The Blue Light
Community Hospital is among hospitals leading the fight against bladder cancer with advanced Blue Light Cystoscopy with Cysview technology.
The FDA-approved procedure uses a blue light with special imaging solution to highlight tumors, make them more visible and detect bladder cancer in its early stages.
Because bladder cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the nation, having a medical team at Community Healthcare System who are skilled in the Blue Light Cystoscopy, using white and blue light to locate tumors, increases the accuracy for a diagnosis and effective cancer care. The technique lessens the chance for incomplete treatment and recurrence.
With 50 to 80 percent of patients having recurring bladder cancer, having the Blue Light is an important new tool that will find a place in the armortarium of urologists.
