About St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary
St. Mary Medical Center opened in Hobart, April 1973. The Auxiliary was already in existence for 20 years at that point, having formed in 1953 at St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Gary.
Today’s Auxiliary donates more than 39,000 hours of service a year to the hospital. The Auxiliary hosts numerous fundraising events each year and operates the hospital Gift Shop. All proceeds benefit St. Mary Medical Center patient care services and the Auxiliary Helping Hands Scholarship Program.

The St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary has been making a difference in the lives of individuals and in the health of our community for over 60 years. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, applications are available at the Information Desks located at the West and East entrance of the hospital. Hours: Monday-Friday, 10 am to 4 pm
The hospital gift shop, located off the West Lobby, offers a unique selection of affordable gifts, including fresh flowers, clothing, jewelry, perfume, greeting cards, stuffed animals, candles, purses, sewing items, snacks and convenience items. The shop is staffed by volunteers, and hours may vary. If you have any questions about gift shop hours, please call the gift shop at (219) 945-4104, or contact Melina Dixon at (219) 947-6011.
St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary Helping Hands Scholarship Program is funded through the Auxiliary’s Gift Shop and fundraising events. The program has awarded many scholarships over the years to students pursuing a healthcare degree. Donations and memorials to the scholarship program are welcomed. A named scholarship can be awarded if a donation(s) of $500 or more is made in memory of someone.
Scholarship applications typically are available from early February and are due by the end of April. Recipients are notified by May and awarded the scholarship in June.
